Something a little different, a little extra, has been the norm at the tiny Lakeview sushi bar Lotus. It just reopened in late February, nearly six months after damage from Hurricane Ida forced a temporary closure. Dining here again revealed a big change.

A good sushi bar can share some character with an old-fashioned drinking bar. The chef handing over a well-made roll can be like the bartender finishing a regular’s favorite cocktail. But mostly it comes from the inadvertent company, the elbow-to-elbow interplay of people sharing the same space, same experience and sometimes the same conversations.
